Ryan McElyea's Introduction

This is a picture of my puppy, Oakley. Taken by myself.

Hello, my name is Ryan McElyea. I am currently a senior, aerospace engineering student. I am hopefully graduating this May! I have had two internships over the last two summers. My first internship was in Windsor Locks, Connecticut where I worked for United Technologies Aerospace Systems. The second internship was this previous summer in Wichita, Kansas for Textron Aviation. Both of them were great experiences and made me realize that aerospace engineering was truly a good choice for me. I am extremely hopeful that I will be able to start a full-time job somewhere this summer. I have a puppy named Oakley. He is a German Shepherd and Border Collie mix. He is currently just over a year old. He is terrified of everything (so much for German Shepherds being protective), but he is extremely sweet. A little bit about myself and what I like to do. I am an Eagle Scout and love to do anything outdoors. I mostly enjoy hiking, camping, and backpacking. I enjoy going paint-balling and snowboard but I rarely do either of those two. I play video games on my computer and sometimes of my Wii-U. I enjoy almost any type of music except country to be honest, which is somewhat weird since I am from Oklahoma. My favorite type of food is Mexican food. I could honestly eat it every day. My very first job was at a Mexican restaurant and I could eat the food every shift that I worked and never get tired of it. My favorite TV shows are House of Cards, The 100, Orphan Black, and Orange is the New Black. I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma and have lived within the state my entire life with the exception of my internships. One fun fact, even though it is not so fun, is that I have never seen the ocean. I am extremely looking forward to this course!

  1. Hi Ryan, congratulations on your past internships, those sound like awesome opportunities and I hope you find something just as great when you start full time! That’s such a funny coincidence that your first job was at a Mexican restaurant because so was mine! I absolutely love Mexican food too and I could live off of queso and chips. I also love hiking and camping too. Do you have any favorite places you’ve been hiking/camping?

  2. Nice to meet you Ryan! Those two internships sounded like awesome. I am also an aerospace engineer and starting my first internship this summer at Nordam in Tulsa. Mexican is also one of my favorite foods, but I have yet to find a really good place in Norman. That is funny that your German Shepherd is shy, I had one growing up that was the same way.

  3. Oh, your puppy is such a sweetheart, Ryan! And I am sure you can help him get over some of his fears. Maybe you could even do something like that as a project for your class, finding stories that could help Oakley learn to be brave. There are some seriously brave animals in the Ramayana, for example, like Hanuman and the whole army of monkeys and bears that help Rama, and even the squirrels... so you could maybe give Oakley an epic pep talk, and see if that helps! :-)

  4. Hi Ryan! I really like the picture of your puppy. He is adorable! It is really nice to see someone from Tulsa in this class because I also live in Tulsa, but I was not born there. I also like to play video games and currently trying to catch up with Orange is the New Black in my free time! Since you are graduating, I am glad that you like your aerospace major and wish you all the best of luck in the future!

  5. Hi Ryan. It is really impressive to hear of your two internships. Starting early and figuring out what you want to do in life is the way to do it. I was in Boy Scouts, but never made it to Eagle. Major props to you! I am more of a fan of Asian food, but Mexican food is definitely not bad! It was very nice to read about you. Good luck with the rest of your semester.

  6. Hi Ryan! We have a few things in common such as we are both from Tulsa and we both don't like country music haha. I think it's really cool that you are into aerospace stuff. I wish I was intelligent enough to get into that hahaha. Two internships is very impressive, and I hope tat experience does lead to a full time job for you after you graduate!

  7. First of all, your puppy is too adorable! And I am on the same boat as you about country music, it's definitely not on the top of my music choices. Also, Aerospace Engineering is so cool! When I was little, I used to visit NASA in Houston all the time and I wanted to be an astronaut for a while. Good luck with the rest of your semester and I hope you get an awesome job once you graduate!

  8. Hi Ryan! Aw, your puppy is so adorable. Whenever I get a dog, I hope that my dog would grow up to be as cute as yours. Such floppy ears~ Good luck on making it to senior year. I’m a senior myself and it feels sort of bittersweet to say I’m graduating. Are you excited that all the shows you love are starting a new season soon?

  9. Hi, Ryan! First of all, Oakley. Is. Adorable. Sweet dogs are the best! I’m so glad you found aerospace engineering as your passion/career! Currently, I’m not too sure about what I want to do… But! I’m a sophomore right now so I have a little more time left. Anyway, good luck on everything! (P.S. The ocean is absolutely beautiful. You should go see it as soon as possible!!)

  10. Nice to meet you Ryan! Your major sounds really hard but congratulations on graduating soon! I should graduate this semester as well but then I have to do grad school. Your dog is so cute! I bet you spend a lot of time with him since you are still in school. I want a dog so badly right now but it is hard to get one when you don't have a yard for them to play in! I am looking forward to seeing your blog and reading some of your story posts!

  11. Hey Ryan, it is nice to meet you! Congrats on your soon to be graduation in May! I am also graduating in May. I am glad those internships helped reassure you in your choice to be an engineer! My brother is a freshman this year and he is going for mechanical engineering so I hope he has the same great experiences. Best of luck in everything!

  12. Honestly, Oakley looked pretty precious to begin with, but the fact that he’s terrified of everything is just delightful, haha. I have a Sheltie, and it’s usually pretty fun to watch him freak himself out over nothing. Congrats on your internships! It looks like you’re poised for a lot of exciting opportunities in a field you genuinely enjoy after graduation, which is exciting. Good luck with your last semester!

  13. Let me just start off by saying that Oakley is absolutely lovely! It sounds like you have been working towards a very stable and interesting future. I don’t know much about aerospace engineering, but it sounds like you really care about it, and that’s fantastic! I enjoy hiking and camping as well! Are there any good locations relatively close to Norman? I’m afraid I haven’t lived here long enough, and all I know is that there’s beautiful scenery to enjoy in West Arkansas. Regardless, it’s very nice to meet you, and I wish you best of luck finding full time work for this Summer!

  14. Hi Ryan!! We have a lot in common!! I also love all outdoor activities. What has been your favorite hiking trail in OK? House of Cards and OITNB are some of my favorite shows and I can't believe they don't come back on until May. When you graduate do you want to work for either of the companies you interned for? Or are you ready to move on to something else? I can't believe you have never seen the ocean. Since you like the outdoors so much, I feel like you would really love it. I look forward to reading your story from this week!!

  15. Firstly, I'd like to say that your puppy is so adorable. Aerospace engineering is a very unique major and it's great that you have been able to gain experience in this field through your internships. You said you plan to start a full-time job this summer. Do you have any specific companies that you would like to work for? I notice that you love the outdoors and hiking. I've never been camping or hiking, but they are both activities that I would to pick up and experience. What are your favorite hiking spots in Oklahoma?

  16. Ryan, your puppy is so cute! I love his name too! I only have a cat at home; I want a puppy so bad! Wow! Your internships sound really intense/awesome! Do you enjoy fishing too? I LOVE mexican food. It's my favorite. You definitely need to take a trip to the ocean! They are all beautiful and it is so nice to just sit in a chair on the beach and listen to the waves (as long as you don't get sunburnt like me!) Thanks for sharing!

I will also be graduating in May and am excited to be done. I have seen the ocean a few times in my life and I recommend seeing one at least once. Good luck with the rest of the semester!
